In Europe, Egypt and Asia body scrubs have been part of the beauty ritual for thousands of years. People would come together weekly to relax, bathe and gossip while they scrubbed their bodies. In ancient Egyptian times, both men and women used scrubs with perfumed oils to keep their skin supple and free of wrinkles from the dry desert heat. Today, this weekly ritual continues in many countries around the world.

Body scrubs continue to be used for a myriad of beauty and health benefits. From removing dead skin cells and dirt from the outermost layers of the skin to moisturizing and replacing natural oils. Body scrubs can also stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanism, encourage cell renewal and eliminate excess fluids and bloating while leaving your skin supple, healthy and glowing!

Tea Tree Essential Oil is one of the most widely used essential oils for its many benefits and applications.

Tea Tree or Melaleuca alternifolia is a genus of plant in the Myrtaceae family. Tea tree is a tall evergreen shrub. The flowers develop clustered together in groups on the spike with as many as 80 individual flowers forming the shape. Alternifolia means “having leaves that alternate on each side of a stem.” The flower heads are sometimes said to resemble white cleaning brushes with small bristles. The leaves of Tea Trees are arranged alternately, smooth, and linear in shape. Tea Trees grow very quickly and can typically be harvested just two years after they are planted. Although the Tea Tree is native to the swampy regions of the eastern Australian coast, it can grow in many different climates and soil types including those of New Zealand, areas in the United Kingdom, and some parts of the United States.

Tea Tree essential oil has a long history of use for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties. Long before its commercial production, Tea Tree oil was used by native Australians, who were known to speak highly of the healing properties of the tea tree leaves. They would commonly crush the leaves to release the oil and inhale the soothing aroma to help treat colds and coughs. The leaves of the Tea Tree were also used topically to help heal wounds and combat infection and irritation. The crushed leaves would be placed over wounds and often held in place with mud poultices while the wound healed. Though the Aboriginals were aware of the healing properties of the Tea Tree for much longer, its use eventually began to spread across Australia. Australian soldiers were even issued Tea Tree oil during World War II for use as an antiseptic.

Tea Tree was given its name by eighteenth-century sailors, who made teas from the leaves of the tree that smelled like nutmeg. These sailors came across the Aboriginals in Australia preparing an aromatic tea made from sticky, camphorous leaves gathered from the Melaleuca tree. It is believed that captains brewed this tea and served it to the crews on their ships in an effort to prevent scurvy. Captain James Cook is believed to have pioneered this idea in the 1770s and is often attributed with the naming of the Tea Tree plant.

Uses and Benefits

The benefits of Tea Tree Essential Oil are abundant and can be utilized through aromatherapy as well as topical use. Used in aromatherapy, Tea Tree essential oil can be calming to the mind, allowing the brain and body to relax while also reducing feelings of stress. This also allows Tea Tree oil to improve sleep quality and promote falling asleep faster and experiencing a deeper sleep. Tea Tree essential oil also possesses expectorant properties that make it effective in relieving congestion and helping to alleviate respiratory infections.

Used topically, Tea Tree essential oil is a powerhouse for the skin and can help with a variety of issues. Because of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, tea tree can help to provide relief to minor burns, cuts, insect bites, and general skin irritation. It works to ease pain and decrease any bleeding while also eliminating bacteria from the wound, and promoting faster healing. Tea Tree essential oil can help to improve the appearance and feel of acne-prone skin. It is known to cleanse the skin and improve the look of pores, while also eliminating blemishes and helping to reduce signs of aging. Tea Tree oil can also help to balance oily skin and soothe skin inflammation, including that which may be caused by topical allergic reactions. Used in hair care, Tea Tree is known to soothe dry and flaking skin on the scalp and help to eliminate dandruff. It can also boost circulation to the scalp which stimulates hair growth.

Tea Tree essential oil has antibacterial, antimicrobial and odor eliminating properties that make it useful in natural deodorants. These benefits can also be seen to combat fungal infections including Athlete’s Foot and toenail fungus. Tea Tree oil’s antibacterial properties make it great for use in household cleaning products and soaps. It can help to reduce unwanted odors in laundry, carpets, and linens as well as freshen the air in our homes. When used to clean surfaces, Tea Tree can work to remove bacteria and pesky germs while leaving behind a fresh, clean scent.

Galentine’s Day is celebrated on February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day. It’s a day for celebrating the love you have for all of your gal friends (and YOURSELF). A day dedicated to ‘showering’ or ‘soaking’ your besties with love and attention in whatever way you choose. We rather prefer all things Savage!

Who invented this special day? Well, it was created by fictional politician, Leslie Knope of “Parks and Recreation”. In the Parks and Rec episode, “Galentine’s Day,” Leslie gathers a group of her closest gal pals for a brunch of waffles and love. “Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style,” Leslie says in the episode. “Ladies celebrating ladies.” And thus, Galentine’s Day was unofficially added to everyone’s calendar.

Ideas for celebrating are up to your imagination. Social distancing may put a damper on some soirées, but Zoom is available for virtual get-togethers too. If you want to host a small and safe gathering, perhaps with some festive face masks… You could do a Brunch; Wine & Cheese evening and watch Sex & The City reruns; Resiling and Dessert party where everyone brings a dessert dish; A Group Pedicure, using Savage Soaps Salt Scrubs and Body Butter. Then give everyone Savage Soaps as gifts! The sky’s the limit. It’s your day to do it up however you wish.

Typically, these BFFs are the people who you’ve been through everything together, so pamper and celebrate one another!

If you have friends that live far away, consider giving them a Savage Soaps gift box or gift certificate. They can use the gift certificate online to buy a special gal treat for themselves!

Why is it that we invest so much into our children’s well-being but never pay attention to the soap we bath them in?

Childproofing, car seats, and helmets are some of the numerous ways in which we protect our children. However, when it comes to ‘bath-time’ we settle for some big brand ‘no tear’ soap; which still contains many of the harmful chemicals that we want to avoid.

Every Savage Soap bar is handcrafted with olive, rice bran oil and non-toxic blends of essential oils. A natural soap that cuts through dirt and also gentle on the skin. You already pulled out all the stops as a parent, so why stop at just soap!

We also know that kids can be picky, but with so many personalized soaps to choose from, there is something for everyone. These are the top favorites:

We usually rush to get our little ones clean when they come running into the house covered in grime; but with all the artificial fragrances and colors in children’s soap these days, they could be better off outside taking a mud bath.

Our kids are the future (or so the song says), that is why it is essential that we rethink our children’s skincare.

Children love to play in nature, so why not clean them with the closest thing to it!

Palm oil is one of the most widely used ingredients in the world. According to the World Wildlife Fund over half of all packaged goods contain palm oil.

It can be found everywhere from lipstick, ice cream, chocolates and soaps. It’s neutral in taste, has a high smoke point and it’s inexpensive, which is the reason why palm oil is heavily used.

So, let us tell you why we don’t use it.

Large areas of tropical forest have been cut and burned to make way for palm oil plantations. This has resulted in the devastating loss of habitat for millions of animal and plant species.

The most affected being the orangutan. The great ape is highly intelligent and one of our closest living relatives. The word ‘orangutan’ is derived from Indonesian and Malay words meaning ‘Person of the forest’. They are essential to tropical ecosystems. Orangutans eat and disperse plant seeds throughout the forest, acting like ‘Gardeners of the Jungle’.  Over the last 25 years palm oil plantations have destroyed over 80% of the orangutan habitat, resulting in the death of 50% of the orangutan population. Researchers have warned that if these trends continue we might see the extinction of the orangutan within the next two decades. Not only are orangutans suffering but humans as well. Amnesty International investigated palm oil plantations in Indonesia and found workers that were being paid approximately $2.50 a day. It was also discovered that children were forced to work on these plantations and were exposed to harmful chemicals including the herbicide paraquat. The EPA ranked paraquat as a ‘Category I’ chemical, indicating the highest level of toxicity.

It is clear that these methods of agriculture and production are not sustainable. That is why at Savage Soaps we don’t use palm oil. Each bar is made with a blend of sustainably sourced olive and coconut oil. Instead of settling for cheaper oils we have invested in ingredients that are great for you and for the environment. Just like the Orangutans’ we are ‘people of the forest’, focused on working with nature, not against it. Now that’s Savage!

The basic structure of all soaps stay relatively the same despite the differing ingredients. This consists of a hydrophobic hydrocarbon tail (detracts water) and a hydrophilic anionic head (attracts water).

Screen Shot 2020-06-13 at 6.23.13 PM

The type of fat or oil can result in a different length of the hydrocarbon but all in all the hydrophobic tail remains long. The carboxylate head is usually balanced by either using potassium + or sodium + . When making soap, triglycerides in fats and oils are heated with a strong alkali base like that of sodium hydroxide (lye). This produces three molecules of soap for every molecule of glycerol.

This process is called saponification (illustrated below)

Soaps are surface active substances also referred to as surfactants. This means they make water clean surfaces better. Water has very high surface tension, which means when you pour water on a table, it sticks together. Surfactants make it easier for water molecules to wet surfaces and increase the ability of dissolving dirt, and oil stains.

The general rule for how soap works is ‘like dissolves like’. The nonpolar hydrophobic tails of soap attract the grease and oils that help dirt and stains adhere to surfaces. The hydrophilic heads remain surrounded by the water molecules which they are attracted to. As more soap molecules embed into a stain they surround and isolate little particles of the stain called micelles. The micelle has tails of soap molecules facing toward the grease with the head facing outward into water, which results in an emulsion of soap mixed with grease in water. Soap molecules partially dissolve the stain to form the emulsion that is kept in the water until the soap is rinsed with more water.

Soaps don’t clean everything perfectly, like with water containing calcium or magnesium ions. Calcium and magnesium salts are insoluble which causes soaps to dirty surfaces because the soap binds to the calcium or magnesium.

Soaps have since been replaced by synthetic detergents that have sulfonate instead of carboxylate head because sulfonates don’t precipitate with calcium or magnesium ions and have better solubility with water. But this doesn’t mean that synthetic detergents are necessarily better for the skin. Detergents are made for cleaning surfaces, clothes, dishes and other things that aren’t related to the skin.

Lather up with Savage Soaps

Of course there are some germs on a bar of soap, there’s germs on all sorts of things in our environment (even your liquid soap bottles), but there are even more germs living on your skin, ‘naturally’.

NOT AT ALL. Doctors even recommend bar soap and water to disinfect the hands and body from all sorts of viruses and bacteria, (even COVID-19). Savage Soaps are great for handwashing and keep your hands from drying out because they’re loaded with moisture-rich natural oils.

The majority of germs that accumulate on your bar soap are from your own skin. As soap is met with the skin and water, either the high acidity, or the neutralizing elements remove dirt from your skin. It’s proven that bar soap is healthy and is not prone to cause illness.

Bacteria? Ewww!

Less than 1% of bacteria in the world actually makes people sick. Half of the cells of the human body are bacteria. The bottom line is that it’s not bad for your bar of soap to hold some of the microorganisms of the skin. It’s actually beneficial and boosts the immune system.

Soaps that claim to be antibacterial have been proven by the CDC to render no health benefits and are also dangerous to the environment. Natural Savage Soaps, handmade with superior oils, are really effective in getting rid of the bad germs while keeping the good germs.

How do I avoid bacteria using bar soap?

When plain soap and water come together, compounds in the soap called surfactants create an open carbon molecule that connects with bacteria and dirt. When you wash with a bar of soap, the soap and bacteria wash right down the drain.

If you want to ensure you’re staying as germ-free as possible you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Use soap and water directly on the skin. (Avoid washing with loofahs and washcloths.)
  2. Wash your bar soap off for 15 seconds with water to wash away dirt and microorganisms.
  3. Keep your bar soap dry between uses by using a soap dish

But, I like my loofah!

If you happen to use loofahs and/or washcloths, doctors recommend cleaning and replacing them daily. Washcloths stay wet for longer periods than bar soap, therefore they can accumulate higher amounts of bacteria.

Unfortunately, it seems that the excitement of this occasion has been dampened by the current pandemic crisis.
