Palm oil is one of the most widely used ingredients in the world. According to the World Wildlife Fund over half of all packaged goods contain palm oil.

It can be found everywhere from lipstick, ice cream, chocolates and soaps. It’s neutral in taste, has a high smoke point and it’s inexpensive, which is the reason why palm oil is heavily used.

So, let us tell you why we don’t use it.

Large areas of tropical forest have been cut and burned to make way for palm oil plantations. This has resulted in the devastating loss of habitat for millions of animal and plant species.

The most affected being the orangutan. The great ape is highly intelligent and one of our closest living relatives. The word ‘orangutan’ is derived from Indonesian and Malay words meaning ‘Person of the forest’. They are essential to tropical ecosystems. Orangutans eat and disperse plant seeds throughout the forest, acting like ‘Gardeners of the Jungle’.  Over the last 25 years palm oil plantations have destroyed over 80% of the orangutan habitat, resulting in the death of 50% of the orangutan population. Researchers have warned that if these trends continue we might see the extinction of the orangutan within the next two decades. Not only are orangutans suffering but humans as well. Amnesty International investigated palm oil plantations in Indonesia and found workers that were being paid approximately $2.50 a day. It was also discovered that children were forced to work on these plantations and were exposed to harmful chemicals including the herbicide paraquat. The EPA ranked paraquat as a ‘Category I’ chemical, indicating the highest level of toxicity.

It is clear that these methods of agriculture and production are not sustainable. That is why at Savage Soaps we don’t use palm oil. Each bar is made with a blend of sustainably sourced olive and coconut oil. Instead of settling for cheaper oils we have invested in ingredients that are great for you and for the environment. Just like the Orangutans’ we are ‘people of the forest’, focused on working with nature, not against it. Now that’s Savage!

ARE THERE GERMS ON BAR SOAPS?

Of course there are some germs on a bar of soap, there’s germs on all sorts of things in our environment (even your liquid soap bottles), but there are even more germs living on your skin, ‘naturally’.

DOES THAT MEAN BAR SOAP IS UNSANITARY?

NOT AT ALL. Doctors even recommend bar soap and water to disinfect the hands and body from all sorts of viruses and bacteria, (even COVID-19). Savage Soaps are great for handwashing and keep your hands from drying out because they’re loaded with moisture-rich natural oils.

The majority of germs that accumulate on your bar soap are from your own skin. As soap is met with the skin and water, either the high acidity, or the neutralizing elements remove dirt from your skin. It’s proven that bar soap is healthy and is not prone to cause illness.

Bacteria? Ewww!

Less than 1% of bacteria in the world actually makes people sick. Half of the cells of the human body are bacteria. The bottom line is that it’s not bad for your bar of soap to hold some of the microorganisms of the skin. It’s actually beneficial and boosts the immune system.

Soaps that claim to be antibacterial have been proven by the CDC to render no health benefits and are also dangerous to the environment. Natural Savage Soaps, handmade with superior oils, are really effective in getting rid of the bad germs while keeping the good germs.

How do I avoid bacteria using bar soap?

When plain soap and water come together, compounds in the soap called surfactants create an open carbon molecule that connects with bacteria and dirt. When you wash with a bar of soap, the soap and bacteria wash right down the drain.

If you want to ensure you’re staying as germ-free as possible you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Use soap and water directly on the skin. (Avoid washing with loofahs and washcloths.)
  2. Wash your bar soap off for 15 seconds with water to wash away dirt and microorganisms.
  3. Keep your bar soap dry between uses by using a soap dish

But, I like my loofah!

If you happen to use loofahs and/or washcloths, doctors recommend cleaning and replacing them daily. Washcloths stay wet for longer periods than bar soap, therefore they can accumulate higher amounts of bacteria.
